Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis Names 2014 Employee of the Year

Collinsville, Ill. – Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis recently named Kara Smith of Belleville, Ill., 2014 employee of the year for always excelling in her current role as education coordinator and license practical nurse (LPN). Area Administrator Gay Little made the announcement.

In the eight years that Smith has been with Unity Hospice, she has served as visit nurse and has held leadership positions including patient care coordinator and her current role as education coordinator. In addition, Smith also served on the palliative care team in which she provided educational and emotional support to families of patients during their loved ones’ transition into hospice.

In her current position as education coordinator, Smith orientates incoming registered nurses and continues to mentor and support them in the field. Additionally, she educates facilities and families on symptom management, presents in-services on various hospice matters and conducts quality assurance in facilities that house Unity Hospice patients so the hospice can deliver top-of-the-line care.

Smith received her LPN accreditation from Beck Area Vocational Center – Red Bud, Ill. and has served as LPN for nearly 25 years. She served as a Red Cross volunteer for two years.
