Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis Names Volunteer of the Year

ST. LOUIS – Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis recently named David Marsh 2014 volunteer of the year for providing exceptional volunteer services to patients throughout Greater St. Louis. Marsh was honored by Unity Hospice Regional Volunteer Manager Brenda McGarvey.

In March 2013, Marsh learned of Unity Hospice’s volunteer needs through his place of worship. Today, nearly 2 years later, he volunteers on a regular basis at several nursing homes in St. Louis County. As a part of the volunteer role of the Unity Hospice care team, Marsh provides services that promote socialization, including a highly individualized therapeutic music program designed for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

“David is very present with each patient and understands their individual needs,” stated McGarvey. “Patients look forward to his visit, his compassionate touch and to the therapeutic music he provides them. He is more than deserving of this award.”

About Unity Hospice Volunteer Program
Unity Hospice volunteers are a part of a highly coordinated care team that is designed to provide patients and their families with the very best of care. Volunteers are specially trained to provide support to enhance socialization with individualized programs including personalized music therapy, pet support and veteran honoring ceremonies. Volunteers are provided to help patients with “the little things in life” that mean the most.

Nearly four decades ago, the hospice movement began as a grassroots volunteer-based service. Today, the volunteer aspect of hospice still exists. As stated by the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), all hospices must meet a 5% volunteer to staff hour ratio. While some hospices struggle to meet the 5% requirement, Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis has reached as high as 74% volunteer hours in the state of Illinois and 127% in the state of Missouri.
