Patient Care Coordinator Deborah Slay Promoted to Director of Clinical Services

Collinsville, Ill. – Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis recently announced the promotion of Deborah Slay to serve as director of clinical services. Administrator Dionne Thompson made the announcement.

A Granite City, Ill., resident, Slay began her journey with Unity Hospice three years ago as registered nurse case manager. Six months later, she became patient care coordinator for Unity Hospice’s Collinsville and St. Louis offices.

As patient care coordinator, Slay was responsible for directing patient care activities and supervising the clinical staff, which included registered nurse case managers, visiting nurses, certified nursing assistants, social workers and chaplains. Additionally, she was responsible for the quality assurance activities, keeping the staff educated on patient care and regulatory issues, as well as continuing to educate patients and their families on the hospice mission, pain management and continuing care requirements.

In her new role as director of clinical services, Slay will manage all clinical staff and oversee patient care. She will play in integral role in making sure the delivery of Unity Hospice care exceeds patient and family expectations, while following hospice and palliative regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Additionally, Slay will manage continuing educational programs and in-service training for all employees, volunteer services, medical records, referral coordination and bereavement services offered by Unity Hospice.

Slay first came to Unity Hospice in 2012 with over 15 years of management experience in acute care. More recently before Unity Hospice, Slay served as director of nursing at a local long term care facility for four years.

An east coast native, Slay received her nursing degree from Wesley College in Dover, Del. In her spare time, Slay enjoys photography, cooking and spending time with her family.
