CHICAGO – As a hospice volunteer, you can make a difference in someone’s life. All it takes is your time and presence.
Volunteers play an important role in providing quality care to hospice patients and their families. By sharing their time, energy and expertise, volunteers complement the medicinal side of care by bringing compassion and caring to the lives of patients in need, encouraging them to live every moment of life to the fullest.
Unity Hospice of Chicagoland hosted a luncheon for their volunteers to show our appreciation for the impact they make on our patients and families. Hosted by Volunteer Coordinator Dorothy Parrott, all Chicagoland volunteers were invited to attend.
Unity Hospice volunteers often serve patients at the bedside, where they provide activities that meet patients’ social, emotional and even spiritual needs through art, reading or social visits. More extensive programs are also offered at Unity Hospice such as animal-assisted therapy for our pet-loving patients as well as Music & Memory, a personalized music program that benefits patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Sometimes, the mere presence of a volunteer is enough to provide comfort and support to patients.
Volunteers also have the opportunity to assist in the office with administrative duties. Most hospice volunteers choose to give their time to helping others because of their own experience with the compassionate care hospice provided to a dying loved one.
Nearly four decades ago, the hospice movement began as a grassroots volunteer-based service. Today, the volunteer aspect of hospice still exists. It is federally mandated under Medicare that 5% of all patient care hours be provided by trained volunteers.
