ST. LOUIS – Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis proudly names Community Relations Representative Dawn Whitmire and Administrative Assistants Christina Penberthy and Emily Hawley as the 2017 recipients of the Employee of the Year Award for the local office.
Whitmire, of Granite City, Ill., began working with Unity Hospice nearly 15 years ago as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Because of her adaptability and diverse skill set, she has held many roles within the company ranging from referral coordinator to bereavement to her current position as community relations representative, which she has held for the past eight years.
As the community relations representative, Whitmire is responsible for educating local families on the benefits of Unity Hospice care and how the company’s palliative approach to care can help relieve pain and symptoms caused from terminal illness. Her marketing territory expands Southern Illinois. It is through working at Unity Hospice that Whitmire has discovered her purpose in life: to be a savior for families facing a crisis and finding them the care they need during a vulnerable time.
“Hospice is all about building relationships; relationships with our hospice families, patients, referral sources and fellow employees,” states Unity Hospice of Greater St. Louis Administrator Jaye Mitchum. “Dawn is a relationship expert, which contributes greatly to the success of Unity Hospice.”
Similar to Whitmire, Penberthy, of Collinsville, Ill., began working with Unity Hospice as a CNA before later getting promoted to CNA supervisor. Her organizational skills and adaptability in other roles exemplified her fit for the administrative role.
“Christina has an infectious personality and smile,” complements Mitchum. “You can hear and feel that in her voice when she answers the phone. Her compassion and desire to meet the caller’s needs is her primary goal. I trust her to be the voice of Unity Hospice when answering the telephone.”
Both Hawley and Penberthy currently serve as administrative assistant. In this role, Hawley and Penberthy oversee the daily operations in Unity Hospice’s Collinsville and St. Louis office locations. This includes, but is not limited to, maintenance of medical records and human resource files as well as general office duties such as regulation of clinical and office supplies. Additionally, they handle incoming phone calls where they are often times the first contact a patient or family makes with the company.

Unity Hospice’s Employee of the Year Award recognizes employees who have demonstrated extraordinary devotion to their work and to our patients.
